The iRobot Genius App allows you to control the robot using a the remote or your smartphone. It also makes it easy to configure the j7+ as well as customize other settings. The j7+ has a larger dustbin than most of the self-emptying robots we've tried. It can hold more debris, but you'll still have to empty the bin every seven to eight month (or more frequently if you have pet hair or any other heavy debris). iRobot sells replacement bags and filters separately.
Another nice feature is the front camera on the j7+, which is advertised to aid the robot in recognizing hazards such as power cords and pet waste and stay clear of them. The camera isn't as effective in low light, so you may be interested in a competitor that has an improved camera, such as the Roborock S7 MaxV.
Lastly, I was pleased to see that the iRobot automatically empties its dust bin into the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal when it's docked. This is a significant improvement over most competitors which require you to open manually and empty the bag. It's a minor thing, but one that will save you some time and frustration.

The ION XL is one of the top robot vacuums that are available for carpets and hard flooring, and it can also sweep and mop your floors. The robot can also maneuver around furniture and can move through carpeted and stairs easily.
I tried the ION XL using our standard test for debris in a family room and kitchen with hardwood flooring and area rugs. It was excellent at cleaning up and removing pet hair, debris and even some of the most stubborn carpet crumbs. It also did a great job maneuvering and didn't get in the way of my bar stools like the iRobot J7+ in this test. The only downside is that the ION XL can't detect toys, cords and shoes that are in its path, therefore you'll need to clean your home prior to using this vacuum if you want it to avoid these items.
The ION XL robotic cleaner isn't as smart as the iRobot J7+, but it's a great alternative if you don't want to spend more than $500 on a robotic. It's better than the eufy RoboVac 11S in most ways it is also more easy to maintain and incurring lower recurring expenses. It also does a better job at vacuuming bare floors and picking up pet hair, but it does not perform as well on low- or high-pile carpet.
It's not as robust but it's still a solid option. The ION XL has a large bin capacity, it can be controlled via an app and voice commands, and is easy to keep up with maintenance. It is also affordable.
